Sound advice.

I'm a musician and composer and I've used meditation and visualization which works wonderfully.

I've also been fascinated by the new idea that the brain is plastic and responds to specific training. If you haven't seen Susanne Jaeggi and Martin Buschkuehl's study on Training Working Memory (PNAS April 2008), you should check it out. Jaeggi and Buschkuehl's team recorded increases in mental agility (fluid intelligence) with a dual n-back progressive method. I've been using the training and I've found it's great for musical cognition, too.
